主讲内容：In this paper, we mainly exam the impact of export tax rebate on firm productivity by using the data from China’s manufacturing firms during 2000-2007. The empirical finding documents that an increase in export tax rebate decreases firm’s total factor productivity (TFP) significantly. This result is robust to the alternative measures of our key variables and endogenous concerns. We also explore the underlying channels though which export tax rebate discourages the improvement of firm’s TFP. One possible reason is that export tax rebate leads to reallocated resources between firms towards less productive firms, therefore less productive firms have no incentive to carry out innovation to improve their TFP. The further study shows that export tax rebate mainly decreases the TFP of survival firms resulting in the decrease of aggregate TFP. Finally, we provide extensive evidences that export tax rebate disadvantages export technology upgrading and reduces firm’s markup as well as profitability, confirming our main findings again.
